The Art of Portraiture: A Two-Day Workshop

For me, portraiture is the maths of art-making—a structured counterbalance to the “anything goes” of the art world. While pure abstraction can feel overwhelming, portraiture offers clear guideposts: the nose is either right or wrong, the highlight on the cheek is placed correctly or incorrectly, the emotion in the expression is captured—or it’s not.

In this two-day intensive, we’ll paint an acrylic portrait from start to finish, beginning with our initial drawing and building up through layers of glazing and critique. Working with a split primary palette, you’ll explore values, colour theory, and mixing while refining the subtle push and pull of directional mark-making—the balance between delicate, barely-there strokes and sharp, controlled focus.

Who’s it for?
Artists who love structure, detail, and the challenge of capturing a likeness. Whether you're new to portraiture or refining your skills, this workshop will deepen your understanding of what makes a portrait truly come to life.
